Rick Hunter was the first Robotech character I made and was originally 12 inches tall like the other cardboard action figures. But I designed the Veritech Fighter and wanted the figures to fit inside the cockpit. The smaller size was harder to work with for thin arms and elbows but it set the scale for the other Robotech figures at about 8-9 inches. The smaller scale also made them seem like action figures and not dolls.
Using colored pencils and paper made corrections harder as I noticed I made Rick's eyes brown and not blue after I completed it. I would have to draw the face and body over again to fix it. Using modern software would make this a simple fix but I didn't have access to Photoshop at the time these were made in the early 1990s.
It was important that the helmet could be removed for all the pilots and still fit all his hair inside it. Making the helmet and head a side view allowed me to make the helmet a little bigger to fit the big pointy anime hair style.
